September 27: Res Ipsa Loquitur

September 26: Mixed Messages

The yellow tape reads "Caution: Wet Paint".

The Rider Alert directly above it states that the bus shelter will be permanently removed in mid-October due to low ridership. "This bus stop will remain open and Route 99 will continue to stop here as usual." So they're painting a bus stop that's scheduled to be dismantled in a few weeks, and removing the shelter not because the stop is being removed but because not enough people stand at the stop to merit continued use of the shelter. I can only hope there's more to this than meets the eye.

September 25: Caterpillar Encounter

This strange caterpillar was traversing the sidewalk in front of us so we stopped to marvel at how LARGE and STRANGE it was. When was got home I discovered it's the papilio rutulus - the larval form of the Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly we've been trying to attract to our garden with nectar flowers. I'm not sure why it left its host plant, but I'm glad to have proof they're reproducing in Ballard. The photo below (from the internet) shows the swallowtail in the more attractive part of its life cycle.

September 24: Bodhi

Amber's brother Aaron visited us recently, along with his girlfriend Ann Marie and her two boys. Bodhi loved our garden and chose some flowers to take home.

Our mornings are getting darker and grayer as we approach the equinox on Sept. 23. This photo captures the grey of the sky reflected in the dark water of Des Moines Marina.

September 20: BikingBillboards.com

This new advertising firm in Seattle promises to take their clients' ads through "custom-designed high visibility routes", with the bikers interacting with potential customers and serving as "stewards for the client's brand." It's also eco-friendly, which is very Seattle indeed. Here they appear to be advertising....themselves.

September 19: Inchworm

September 18: Sunflower Thief

We had planned for these sunflowers to serve as a source of seed for little birds through the winter, but this squirrel devoured the largest seedhead in one sitting (and will undoubtedly be back for the rest soon).

September 12: Hard Work

The temperature at the fairgrounds reached 96 degrees, but the food trailers must have been at least 10 degrees warmer inside.

September 11: Prize Winning Poultry

This Old English rooster won the grand prize.

September 10: Rooster

This rooster should have won a blue ribbon just for personality.

September 9: Okanogan County Fair

September 6: Roots

These above-ground roots were originally embedded in the stump which served as a "nurse log" but the stump is now almost completely decayed; the trunks of the two trees are barely visible at the top of the frame.

September 3: Large and Small

Watershed Park is full of towering trees and miniature wonders. This little tableau of moss and mushrooms looked ready for a fairy teaparty.

Another view of the ultra-modern design that dominates in SLU.
